Dare to Dream

Who Am I Meant to Be?

Few people dare to dream. To live their lives striving to achieve their potential and become the person they were meant to be. Most people live in survival, as though they have to constantly protect themselves from unseen dangers, even though they don’t exist. Sadly, those who do dare to dream rarely ever see their dreams and ambitions fulfilled as they are not prepared to take risks and move out of their comfort zone. Some research suggests that the figure is as low as one per cent of the population who are becoming the person they were meant to be.

Studies show that the basis for self actualization is self-awareness. People who lead happy and successful lives are more self-aware and are able to make full use of their talents and abilities. People with low levels of self-awareness are more likely to develop mental illness and look outside of themselves for help rather than looking inward to learn the source of their distress. Self-awareness is an essential first step toward creating mental health and achieving your potential.

In this ground-breaking book, Who Am I Meant to Be, the reader will be able to gain self awareness through learning what their Striving Style and predominant need is.  They will also learn the difference between their self-protective and self-actualizing behaviors. This puts them into the driver's seat in their life, with the awareness needed to self-actualize.

Wouldn't you like to live your life to the fullest?  What need you must satisfy to strengthen your foundation and resolve?  Without understanding ourselves and the predominant need that must be met to feel secure, we are more likely to be self-protective than open, curious and reflective. We are conditioned to put on our best face for the world and to hide perceived inadequacies. We are a society that has little capacity for self-reflection, priding ourselves in how successful we are at deceiving others and ourselves. We numb ourselves with alcohol, drugs and constant activity to ward off feelings or thoughts that are upsetting.

People still believe it is weak to talk about needs and emotions. At best, they are only aware that they don't like something about themselves and so they can't let anyone see. Trying to become more self-aware doesn't happen naturally when we are taught to control ourselves and conform to the demands of our society.

The Striving Styles Personality System is based on the premise that if we want to know what we are born for, we must know what we are born as. Too often we are trying to figure out what we are meant to be or do without really knowing who we are. This disconnect causes us to look outside of ourselves for answers to questions that can only be answered from within. This book will give the reader basic information about who they are born as so they can grow from there!

It is said that at the moment of your birth have an awareness of your potential and an idea of who you are meant to be. In the next moment, it this awareness disappears into the unconscious where it becomes our task to uncover it during our lifetime. Although there are some people who seem to know who they are, where they are going, and who they are going to do it with, most of us struggle along defining ourselves as we go. We go through periods of indecision, insecurity and self-questioning without having the skills and capacity to look inward at our nature and our personality needs. We tend to look out and compare ourselves to others who aren’t struggling, making our problems even worse. Looking outside of ourselves only helps to distance us further from our true nature, while making us more dependent on people in the outer world to confirm our value.

When we spend our time just meeting our survival needs, we become experts at surviving and can spend the rest of our lives doing that.  But even though we may put all of our energy into surviving, there is still the spark inside of us that moves us toward achieving our potential. That potential is always there for us to develop and it is best met by understanding one's Striving energy or Striving Style. When you use the energy of the striving styles you most prefer, it will engage you in your life in a way that you are most likely to achieve your potential.

Let’s face it. We have more information on how to create the life we are meant to live at our fingertips than we could ever read in a lifetime. We read it, some of us obsessively, yet few actually use it to make significant changes in their lives. So why is this and what can we do about it? This book provides answers to these questions and more!

My mother used to say, “If you're so smart, why do you act so stupid?” It is such a profound question. It illustrates the dichotomy of knowing and doing that is at the heart of much suffering. The belief that logic is superior to emotions, and that control over emotions and needs is the way to create happiness adds to the confusion and mental anguish that people experience when they achieve what they are supposed to, but they are still unhappy. With all of the trying and doing what we are told will bring us happiness or enlightenment, no one is striving to be who they are meant to.

If all it took was knowledge to become who we are meant to be, we would all be doing it. Logic seems to dictate this. If you want to be thin, you eat in a way that causes you to be thin. If you want to be successful, you work hard. If you want to have less stress in your life, meditate. Logical. So why is it that so few people can close the gap between what they want to be like and what they are like. Conclusion, some human behaviour is just not logical and if it isn't logical, it must be emotional. If it is emotional, it has something to do with our needs.
